REDCap Africa Day was held on 29 March 2019 hosted by Wits University in Johannesburg, South Africa. I was very fortunate to be able to attend this event and thought it would be great to share with you some of the highlights. But first..
What is REDCap?
REDCap is a secure web application for building and managing online surveys and databases. While REDCap can be used to collect virtually any type of data (including 21 CFR Part 11, FISMA, and HIPAA-compliant environments), it is specifically geared to support online or offline data capture for research studies and operations.https://www.project-redcap.org/
What I do with REDCap
So part of my normal day time job is working in the REDCap platform to design projects with all the necessary components for the research study. It is basically data management with a bit of development and a dash of coding. But mostly it’s creating forms that make sense with all the relevant metadata which facilitates easy data collection. It’s fun!
The greatest challenge would be that you kinda have to figure things out in conjunction with the type of research being done. So often you’ve got to create solutions outside of the standard use to provide effective support to the clinical research group. More fun!
Working with REDCap is how I realized that I might enjoy coding and set me on a path down a rabbit hole and now look where I am. Extra fun!
More about the proceedings
The best thing about REDCap Africa Day is that it brings together all these different groups and provides us with a space to discuss all things REDCap. Take a look at the agenda:

Before I was a silo alone. Now I have all these excellent people that I can consult with on all things REDCap. I suppose the biggest take away is that an community really fosters support in your endeavours.
And it is my hope that I can use my website to similarly connect to other coders/ tech people. Make the journey through the code a lil easier with the knowledge that I’ve got people.
