The Rose Contract by Scottie Kaye

Sleeping Lotus #1: The Rose Contract

Book blurb

Raena Barren was born with a secret: of all the magic users in the kingdom of Soma, she is the only one who can hide her power. As a child, she used this magic to help her survive on the streets–until she saved the life of a strange boy called Jorr Portent. He rewarded her with a job in the castle of Soma–and Raena spent the next ten years falling in love with him.

But while Raena’s life as a servant is sheltered, Jorr’s world is one of spies and assassins. When Raena comes of age, their paths will diverge forever… unless Raena can earn a place by his side. To become one of Jorr’s operatives, however, Raena must get to know her own body, and outsmart the deadly people around her. She must also sell her innocence to whatever man pays the most… even if that man can’t be Jorr.

Dragon Review

I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

Sometimes I forget to read the blurb or book synopsis. And I find myself going in without a clue as to what the book is about. Based on the name I was expecting a romance novel with some Victorian tropes. Instead my world was rocked! Oh hello… Assassins! And wait… there’s some interesting magic here too! Needless to say, it was quite a surprize and one I am thoroughly glad for.

We have a very well detailed world with a very detailed hierarchy and some definite power players straight off the bat. And then we have this young woman, Raena, with a difficult history trying to secure her future by any means. Of course, she is not completely alone in this journey, as she crashes into the troublesome Jorr.

The undertone is very much poised on a choice… To embrace your authentic self or not? All that you are and all that you can be, even if that means that you’re not exactly the good kind. But then again isn’t it sooo good to be bad. Make your own rules and break the mould which society has cast you in.

I am invested in Raena’s journey and would really like to see how things pan out for her. Luckily this book is the start of a series and I’m definitely going to pick up the next book.

Fair warning. There is plenty sexual content and violence and implied rape.
